A Lovely Mother Daughter Moment
It was a beautiful morning in Baltimore on Sunday, June 26, 2011. I was up at 5:30 AM so I could get to the Baltimore Women's Classic (BWC) 5K. My plan was to be there by 6:30. I thought Papa Razzi (PR) and Sydney were going to meet me there so they could sleep in a bit later. PR surprised me by deciding that going downtown as a family would be better. So we were all in the car by 6:40 AM. A little later than if I had gone on my own, but thrilled to have the loving support of my family! That Syd is a champ, even at ridiculous hours of the morning!
The sun was shining as I prepared for the morning's challenge. A 5K run through downtown Baltimore near Federal Hill and Rash Field. There were tons of fabulous volunteers there to help keep everything running smoothly. I was met there by my sister Amy, and friends Heather and Tracy. They had completed the BWC training program in Westminster, MD together and were looking forward to the race. I was also met by my Team In Training Mentor Melanie Moraza. She always inspires me to do my best. I had told her that I had been having trouble with cramps in my calves. She was kind enough to bring a funky tool that helped me to roll the cramps away before the race. Now that is support!
After a fabulous welcome, there was a great warm-up led by Lynn Brick of Brick Bodies. The music was pumping and the moves really helped to get everyone in a great mood. Syd loved it and so did I.
Everyone lined up according to their approximate run/walk time. Mel is much faster than I am, so although we lined up together (just ahead of the walkers), I encourage Mel to not let me hold her back but to do her best. I had a good run/walk and know that I can push myself harder in the next one! Mel ended the race with a personal record. I am so proud of her! Amy and Heather completed the race together, both running the whole time faster than ever before. Tracy did great and seemed genuinely surprised by how well she did! After Mel finished, she even headed back to find me and encouraged me to sprint to the finish!
After a quick hug from Syd and a kiss from Billy at the finish, we headed to the Fun Run track. My daughter Sydney (5) completed her first Kid's Fun Run. She did great and was very proud of herself, and of course we were very proud of her! All the kids received a medal and a goody bag. She got to pose for a picture with the Gator and even got to try on Ms. Teen Baltimore Washington's Tiara!
While I was proud to completed the run. It was a moment after the run that got me. Since the BWC supports women with Gynecological Cancers, they encourge healthy living through generations. They celebrate not only the fastest runners but Mother Daughter Teams. They presented the age group winners and then invited all of the mother-daughter participants to the stage to receive a special medal. While my husband took pictures, I helped Syd to put the medal around her neck and put mine on, I was overcome by emotion. I truly believe that the changes I am making by getting healthy is going to have such a positive impact on Sydney. The realization of how blessed I am really hit me.
I am quite sure that this is only the first of many races we will participate in together. It was a lovely mother daughter moment!
