This Ain't your Mama's grilled cheese, that's what I thought when I looked at the menu board at Grilled Cheese & Co in Catonsville.
They are in the building at the corner of Edmonson Avenue and Harlem Lane, that for many, many years housed the Catonsville Bakery. I have fond childhood memories of stopping there after church on Sunday's to pick up buns and fresh bread to take to my Grandmother's.
Walking in the door, the memories came flooding back, the smell of fresh baked bread hit me. My daughter and I checked out the wide variety of sandwich, soups and salads offered on the big chalkboard that takes up one entire wall.
The place is small with only about 10 or 15 small tables, that I imagine can get pretty crowded. Parking is a bit tight, but I would say it's worth finding a space for you and for your car. We were greeted by a very friendly cashier and told that they can pretty much substitute anything in any of their sandwiches. We placed our order and grabbed a table. A short time later, someone else brought out Syd's sandwich, and minutes later, my number was called.
Sydney decided on the kid's meal of 1/2 a traditional grilled cheese served with a drink and a side (applesauce). I thought I would try one of the gourmet grilled cheese and went with the Blue Ox. The Blue Ox is a grilled steak with blue cheese and horseradish. I was offered a combo that included a small cup of the soup. I decided on the cream of crab.
I was concerned that the sandwiches would be slathered with butter and greasy. Happily, the bread was toasted perfectly on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. The blue cheese/horseradish combo is a good one and the steak was very tender. Although the cream of crab was more soupy than creamy, the taste was delicious with just the right spice. Syd's half sandwich was more than enough for her, and as you can see, she enjoyed it! I am going to miss our special mommy/daughter time when Syd in is school full time next year!
There are many sandwich options prepared by a staff that obviously loves what they do. They were friendly and answered my questions with ease. Two of the cooks (pictured below) are Willam (left) and Corey. (right). William's favorite sandwich is the Kickin' BBQ Chicken, while Corey favors the Sarducci (Italian Sausage, roasted red peppers, onions and mozzerella, what is not to like?).
We'll have to head back and try them another day. Thanks for a lovely lunch guys!
