My mother was the youngest of 7 children. She was the well-loved favorite Aunt and God-mother to more kids than I will ever know. As the story goes, my mom had been engaged no less than 3 times, but always called it off just knowing something was not right. By this time, she was in her mid-thirties, which at the time was considered "AMA-advanced marrying age" She decided that if she was not married or otherwise engaged by 35 she would take a trip across Europe.
My mother was a devout Catholic who believed very strongly in signs. She prayed a Novena that St Theresa of Child Jesus, also known as "the little flower", asking for a "necessary favor". She asked that St. Theresa would help her with a sign of white roses to know if she was to be married, and if so, which man should be her husband. She never shared that prayer.
One day, my mother met a young soldier named Donny, actually a younger man by 7 years. During their courtship he asked her to marry him at least 2 times, to which she replied no. He continued to pursue her. After they had been dating about 6 months (when you know, you know) Donny decided to ask her to be his wife one last time. He went to the florist and asked him for a dozen red roses. The florist only had 6 left. Not wanting to appear cheap, he supplemented them with 6 white roses...
My mother and father were married just a few months later. Since she married a soldier, she got her trip to Europe anyway!
Sadly, we lost my mom in May of 1980, but her faith and joy in living has been instilled in all of us!
