Surviving My Serengeti with Grace

When I picture GRACE, I picture my mother who, when facing dying of cancer and leaving her husband and four young children, managed to maintain her strong faith in God, and never let us doubt her love or God's love for us.   When I picture GRACE, I picture my Aunt who took on the role mothering of her sister's four children helping us not only to survive, but to thrive in the face of pretty terrible circumstances.  When I picture GRACE, I see my sister, who after 18 years found out her relationship was based on lies, and has come out  the other side a more beautiful, and a truly amazing woman in her own right.

When I picture GRACE, I picture mom's who lose their children to a horrific disease who continue the fight to make sure other mom's don't have to go through what they went through.  When I picture GRACE, I see the severly wounded soldier's family taking on the horror's of war in their day to day existence and still manage to believe in God and share his love.  When I picture GRACE, I see the spouse who after decades of marriage becomes caretaker to their loved one with Alzheimer's or Dementia, and manages to survive on glimpses of the person they once knew.

When I look in the mirror, do I see GRACE? Do I handle my every day challenges be they big or small with GRACE?  Sometimes I do. Sometimes I fall short. I continue to try.

According to the Results of the What Animal Am I? QUIZ in Surviving Your Serengeti I am a Giraffe. The funny thing is that whenever I have visited the zoo, the Giraffes have always been one of my favorite animals to watch.  I love to watch them gently nuzzle their young, chew the leaves and walk across the yard on their long legs as if on air.  Who knew that I identified so closely to them?

Giraffes

This is an excerpt from the results:

  • They seek to make others feel like they're the most important person with whom they can spend time, and always put the needs of others first.
  • They live according to personal standards that are higher than any given code of conduct, and incorporate dignity, honor, and respect in extending grace to others-even when things have not gone their way.

In this very challenging time in the mortgage business, changes are coming fast and furious. I get calls almost daily from clients and friends who are concerned about the state of Real Estate, of our Country, of the World.  I do my best to help, sometimes only if by listening.  I do my best to go above and beyond the expectations of others.  I do my best to live up to the writing in my mother's own hand on a piece of paper found among my mom's things not long after her death:

Treat others so that when they walk away from you, they feel better about themselves.

I truly believe that if we use the GRACE that has been given to us, or instilled in us, or demonstrated to us in the quiet acts of others, we will not only SURVIVE in our own Serengeti, but, like the animals of the Serengeti, we will THRIVE in business and in life.

That all we can really hope for is that we never stop trying.  That's just the Wildebeest in me to never give up until I'm dead.  :)  Loved your descriptions of grace.

Bridget, When I look at you, I see Grace. You always make others feel like they're the most important person and you always put the needs of others first.  I feel better after spending time with you!

Bridget.

What a moving story.  Your descriptions of Grace are so beautiful.  Thank you for sharing

Bridget,  Your post brought tears to my eyes.  Thank you for sharing your story with me and the rest of AR.  I agree with Margaret.  You make the other person feel like they are the most important person in the world.

Keep in mind that 'this, too, shall pass' and the real estate & mortgage worlds will get back to a more level playing field.  I sense that you are a harder worker, too.  The combination of Grace & hard work will take you a long way.

PS  I really enjoyed meeting you & your family in Baltimore a few weeks ago.  How is Syndey?

Donne,  Some days are surely harder than others!

Margaret, Thank you for your kind words.  I try to make Mom proud in may day to day interactions. Somehow it is often the one's closest to me where I fall short!

Charlene, Thank you!  What kind of animal are you?

Mary, This was an emotional one to share. So many changes, we are just rolling with the punches and doing our best to keep our borrower's and our partners informed!  We enjoyed meeting you too!  Sydney sleeps with Tiny (the bear Ms. Margaret gave her) every night and just the other night asked when Tiny and Beary-Y were going to see each other again!

How cute, Bridget.  I will send her another picture of Beary-Y soon.

Bridget--I just took the quiz & learned that I am a giraffe, too. That is why we felt so comfortable with each other when we met.

However, my computer would not let me download the chapters.

Hi Bridget,

Wow, that is so beautifully written and touching!  You do embody grace.

I too love the giraffes at the zoo.  They are quiet, peaceful and majestic herbivores.

Lisa,  Thanks so much!  Just finished a steak, so I don't identify COMPLETELY with the Giraffe!

Hi Bridget,

Well, I just read all the winners and yours is still my favorite.  I would have given you top prize!

Bridget,

I have to concur, that my post pales in comparison to yours, and that you should have been one of the winners. Although it is not my animal type, I should aspire to be more giraffe-like.
