Summer Camp Catonsville, Ellicott City For Your Drama Queen or King

Summer Camp Catonsville, Ellicott City For Your Drama Queen or King

My 5 ("and 11/12th's") year old loves to sing, dance and act, so when we were looking for things for her to do this summer (which would also give me the time needed for work) we decided that Performing Arts Camp would be a great fit.

My family has been going to Toby's Dinner Theatre for shows as long as I can remember.  My sister Kim has been playing guitar (among other instruments) for shows there for over 20 years.  When Kim told me about the CCTArts Program, I knew we had to check it out for Syd.

The Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts (CCTA) founded by Toby Orenstein, owner of Toby's Dinner Theatre is an amazing organization that not only teaches school-age kids how to perform by putting on an actual show, they also help kids to find their talents and focus on positive outlets.

Sydney has been involved in the Tots on Broadway program through CCTArts.  Tots is a Saturday program where she has been learning some of the basics of performance for two sessions.  She loved it for 45 minutes one time a week, but would she love it all day for three weeks? When we learned that the same amazing folks who run the Tots (and Kids) on Broadway program would be involved in the summer program, we knew that Sydney would be just fine!

Today there was a performance to give the parents and idea of what they have been working on for the last few days.  I thought, what could they possibly have put together in 3 days?  Don't they realize how much I have to do?  Boy, Oh Boy, was I pleasantly surprised!

Here's a sample. Syd is the one in the yellow dress.

There are 3 distinct aspects of CCTA:

1. The Conservatory offers several performance arts based programs designed to nurture and develop the whole child. They include a professional student ensemble, musical theatre classes, after school drama programs at area schools, summer performing arts camps and the nationally-recognized Teen Professional Theatre Workshop that provides a unique theatrical experience to highly motivated and talented young actors.

2. Theatrical Arts Productions (TAP) produces professional productions each year that are related to school curriculum and reflect current social issues and concerns. These productions are enjoyed by thousands of students each year at venues throughout the area. Productions have included: Sundiata, The Lion King of Mali; Ben Carson, M.D.; The Diary of Anne Frank; and Seussical, The Musical!.

3. Outreach Programs, designed to make theatre arts available and accessible to the neediest students in our region. They includeThe Ben Carson Project, a program that each year brings several thousand students from the Batimore City Public School System to free performances of Ben Carson M.D. and The After School Theatre Project (Howard County, MD and Baltimore City)

The mission of CCTA is:

to educate through the arts by creating theatrical experiences that "inspire thought, action, creativity, and change". CCTA is dedicated to making these experiences available and accessible to as many members of the community as possible with an emphasis on reaching and nurturing our children regardless of gender, race, religion, ability, age, or socioeconomic status.

There is still time to sign up for:
Session II Disney's MULAN Jr. (July 11-22, Ages 6-12)
Session III, Back to the 80's (July 18-August 5  Ages 12-18)

If you have a Drama Queen or King, this is the camp for you!

Oh my, they are just the cutest! And your little Syd is on her way to stardom I would say. How cute is that?

Lovely daughter!  Mine didn't need any drama coaching, she had that mastered by age 4!  Very cute, thanks for sharing.

Martha,  Since she was an infant my brother has been saying that we need to parlay her into family wealth!  Wouldn't that be nice?

Andrea,  Thanks, we think she's pretty special!  I was truly amazed by how wonderful all the kids did in only 3 days.  I am really looking forward to the final show-Camp Rock July 6th and 7th.  The great thing about this program is every kid is made to feel like they are on the way to stardom!!

Cathy, Believe me, Syd doesn't need any coaching there either!  I am just hoping to hone the drama into lovely and non exasperating things!!
