Did The Mailman Send Me Flowers?
Part of our preparation for Christmas this year included "What God Wants For Christmas". It is an interactive Nativity that helps children to have an experience that explains the true meaning of Christmas.
Each day the child opens a special box with a figurine from the Christmas Story inside, that when complete, reveals the Nativity. Each figurine: the Angel Gabriel, Mary, Joseph, Jesus, a shepherd and a wise man is accompanied by a poem that tells the story of each of the most integral people in the Christmas Story along with a bible verse.
The last stanza of each poem is "What God wants for Christmas? It's-to you-a surprise. In box number seven it is disguised. But-no peeking! Be patient! For this you must wait. It's what you offer Him, and it's really great."
I loved Sydney's guesses and the anticipation was building.
The last box holds only a mirror, revealing...What God wants For Christmas is YOU.
It is a special way to help children learn that Christmas is about more than Santa Claus and presents. It helps to reinforce that God gave us the first and best gift, Jesus and that He wants us in return.
"Did the Mailman send me flowers?" That was the question that Sydney, my six year old asked when she was called to the front door to retrieve her delivery.
She was even more excited when she read the card that said:
Mama and I are so proud of you. We always want you to remember that YOU are the best gift of all! We LOVE you!
She said to me, "Mama, it's not about the presents, it's about the love isn't it? The flowers are beautiful, it means so much to me that you thought enough to send them."
I really think this kid is wise beyond her years.
What a fun way to reinforce the beliefs we are trying to instill. These flowers will be around to remind us through the next few weeks what this season is all about for us as Christians and hopefully the memory of her first flower delivery will always remind her of God's gift!
A special thanks to the TODAY Show and Jill's Steals and Deals for the great discount on flower delivery that helped me reinforce the true meaning of Christmas for my daughter!
