Is Technology Taking The Place Of Our Brains?

We are living in an incredible time.   We are more connected than ever before.  Technology is amazing and getting better every day.  Our phones are at the ready to give us any information we need at a moments notice.

If out and about and a question comes up, it is not uncommon to hear "Just a sec, I'll google it!"  We don't have to hold onto information like we used to, it's too easy to look it up.

Are we letting technology to take the place of our brains?

Today I was on my way to a meeting at the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors.   Just before leaving the house I pulled up google maps and used voice recognition to request directions to the GBBR offices and headed out.

I hopped on the beltway and made my way to 83.  I knew the office was in Timonium, Maryland.  I have been there several times.  After I got off the exit, my navigator announced "next right to 83S".  Now, I had JUST gotten off 83 North and had a pretty good idea of where I was heading.  At a light I glanced at my phone and checked the seemed right.  The light changed and I hopped on 83S.  As I followed the directions I realized I was heading right to the OLD office!  UGH!!

After making a U-Turn, I got myself headed back to where I had JUST came from, less than 10 minutes before.  I was within about 1/2 mile from where I needed to be when I turned off my brain and trusted technology to tell me where I needed to be!  TECHNOLOGY FAIL!

Technology is amazing, but sometimes relying on it instead of our own brain is not the best idea!  If we are not careful with technology, we will forget how to think on our own!

By the way, if you are looking for the Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors, it's at:

1954 Greenspring Drive, Suite 100, Timonium, MD 21093

Hi Bridget. Very informative. Love your post.

It's happened to me Bridget. I followed the wrong directions my GPS was announcing even though I knew they were wrong! I've actually gone backwards a bit.. I stopped using my iPad/iPhone calendar and have an "old-fashioned" agenda book that I just love.. I handwrite *gasp* all my appointments in there and check off my to-do list. Same goes for my budget by the way .. it's a notebook that I've been keeping for years. It works for me.

I agree.  Look how people react when they lose their phone or the internet is out. Mayhem! Panic!  We're hopelessly dependant on technology.

Bridget- we have to remember that technology is a tool for us to use to help us not take the place of our brain.  I find myself "Googling" things all too often.

Thanks Mike

Andrea, I am a bit awkward with technology sometimes, I am a fan of the pen and paper too...I can't imagine life without my google calendar though!

Chris, Hopelessly dependent...absolutely.  A friend posted a photo of a group of babysitters and moms at the park on facebook today, every single one was engrossed in their phones.  Missing out on real life!

Kathy, Technology is a great tool, too often we use it as a crutch.  Sometimes it's nice not to know the answer I think!
