Ending Gun Violence In 2016
The gun violence continues in the United States.
When tragedy strikes in a big way, with multiple deaths by one or a few shooters, all the politicians come out. The pundits are up in arms, it's all over the news and the talk of the day around the water cooler.
So sad, those poor people.
See, we need better gun control.
It's not guns that kill, it's people that kill people. The guns are not the problem.
THOSE people, THEY are the problem.
How was it that nobody knew?
Everyone has something to say, but there is not enough ACTION.
Something has to be done, unfortunately, nothing will be done. It will happen again and again and again. It will keep happening until the world becomes a nicer place, until we become more connected as human beings.
I know that that sentence probably sounds a bit namby pamby. Maybe I even sound like I am wearing rose colored glasses. Of course I know that there are lots of reasons for the violence-drugs, mental illness, gangs, etc.
I am here to tell you that you can make a difference. How can I make a difference? I don't know those people!
You MAY know those people, or at least maybe you come into contact with them. They could be the cashier at your grocery store, your kid's friend, the guy serving you at starbucks or that fast food restaurant. They could be your loan officer or title agent, realtor friend-streched out, stressed out, over-worked, underpaid, living on the edge, not able to support their family. Maybe it's the guy with a sick parent, sick child or maybe they are sick themselves. Maybe that woman you cut off in the parking lot is holding down two minimum wage jobs while trying to take care of her family. Maybe that family at the grocery store at 11 PM on a school night...ask if there is something they need instead of judging them for being out so late. You could change the future for those kids.
Many times the violence is turned on themselves, or loved ones. Sometimes it is turned on a specific bully or maybe a preceived slight sent someone over the edge. And sometimes the violence is planned, and calculated and carried out in a methodical, sick way, targeting a group of innocents. We have seen that more times than I want to acknowledge.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Start by being more kind. Start by getting off your cell phone and actually talking to the person in front of you. Start by spending time with your kids-dinner, family game night. Start by putting positive energy out in the world.
START BY STOPPING.
Stop adding to the hate by NOT writing that scathing comment on someone's facebook post or other social media. Stop sharing the hate speech. Stop giving someone the finger who cut you off in traffic. Stop acting like we are so different and start acting like we are so alike.
Whatever you do START. You can help to end gun violence, bullying, hate. It's not about the guns, it is about human connection.
