Baltimore is full of characters. I have very fond memories of one in particular.
I remember going to Memorial Stadium as a kid with my family. We went for Baltimore Colts games and Baltimore Oriole Games. I don't remember much about the games, just cheering my head off and eating hot dogs, peanuts, and sodas, that was quite a treat. I have vague memories of Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Ken Singleton, and Cal Ripken Jr.
I do remember the guy who spelled out "O-R-I-O-L-E-S" to a roaring crowd. The Oriole Bird does it now, he's the official mascot, but "Wild Bill" was the original! His name was "Wild Bill" Hagy, and he was honored last night at Camden Yards. If you were an O's Fan back then and ventured to the stadium, you knew where the upper deck of section 34 was, that's where he sat . Every game that I attended "Wild Bill" was there. He got the crowd riled. Nobody seems to know how he got started as the unofficial cheerleader for the O's, although based on all I have read, I think there might have been a little drinking involved.
I can almost guarantee, if you were at Memorial Stadium in the 70's and 80's, you remember him. I just found his obituary from last year it really tells his story. I hope you enjoy this blast from the past....
I am glad the O's Honored Wild Bill, he embodies the spirit of Baltimore and the joy of being a fan! We miss you Bill! I imagine he's sitting with the BIG GUY, drinking a beer and still cheering on the O's!
